Peter Pool has been part of the Graphics Metropolis team as a hairstylist/make-up artist until his recent relocation to the East Coast to reunite with his family.
Below, you can find my conversations with this amazing creative individual.
GM: Hello Peter! Thank you for gracing us with this interview and of course, for being part of a number of Graphics Metropolis Productions.
To start this interview, tell us something about yourself. Who is Peter Poole and when and where did this talent for hairstyling started?
PP: Hello! I’m originally from Ohio, and from a huge family, I fall at the end number 11 (the baby) I have 4 sisters and 6 brothers. I always had an artistic side growing up. Played with a lot of dolls :) cutting their hair off and sewing in new pieces, doing little up-do’s and what nots. So I always played in hair. I watched my sisters a lot and was just inspired. They were my first clients. Becoming a hairstylist is something I always wanted to do and I’ve been to school a lot for it. I dropped out of beauty school at least 3 to 4 times over the course of 10 years then finally in 2010 I said enough let me do this and I graduated in August and was licensed by October. Took me awhile but i got there! :)
GM: Do you remember your first ever major gig as a hair stylist? How was it?
PP: Yes first major gig was a High end fashion show downtown LA. I was freaking out. I have done some good work with models, but it was always one single girl and I would work on them for at least an hour or two. I now had landed a gig with over 15 girls and 5 minutes a piece. Needless to say I was a success. Next major gig was my first film shot last July “Dumbbells” I was an assistant stylist and I love it.
GM: How did you land to Los Angeles? Tell us something about your years of experiences as a hairstylist in this city.
PP: Oh good ol’ LA. Well let’s see… I was always bound for LA. In high school my friends called me California cause I said the last day of school I was leaving, kinda funny no one believed me but I set out and have been in LA 20 years. Being a hairstylist in this city is a rat race, everyone is an actor, model, dancer, make-up or hair stylist, racing for the top. And I wouldn’t rather have done it anywhere else. LA will force you to stay on your A-Game so for that I can appreciate it.
GM: Any crazy experiences so far?
PP: Well I did do hair for a porn actress once and that was a little bizarre. :)
Well I do do hair for a porn set out in Chatsworth once. It’s for a porn actress once and that was a little bizarre and interesting :)
GM: How would you describe your experiences with the Graphics Metropolis team?
GM: I PP: Amazing…Hetic…Funny…and a real good time I always have a ball …..I have grown to really care for these folks. Such a great team of people. It is a joy to work with a group that has so many individual talents to add to the magic process.
GM: I remember you curling a model’s hair in the desert area without any electric or special tools. How did you do that? Are you a hair whisperer or something magical?
PP: I do remember that experience it was crazy..the remote area we shot in was perfect only problem was there was no electric plug in…but never fear I totally compromised..hair school 101 just do pins curls and hair spray and luck :) it turned out great! The classic pin curl set is something that woman have been using for years, this was before rollers, I did a set of pin curls with a little hair spray, 15 curls total 6 curls forward, 6 curls backward, and 3 standing and there you have it, 1930’s glam.
GM: What inspires Peter Poole in his hairstyling? Any specific heroes in the field of hairstyling?
PP: I would have to say I am super inspired by the 1930’s and 40’s old Hollywood looks, I just love that era. The hair was amazing the wave patterns and simplicity really sets the look. No specific heroes but I love all who can create amazing styles.
GM: For you, what are the three most important items that a hairstylist should have?
PP: Bobby Pins, Hair spray, brush/Comb, I feel are the most important because with just these 3 items you can make magic.
GM: Describe Hair styling in one word.
PP: Finished!
GM: Thank you so much. Any advice to all the young and aspiring folks out there who would want to venture in the field of hair styling?
PP: For all of you inspiring hair stylist remember not to take criticism at heart and listen to people, opinions do matter, and if you just love what you do never stop or let anyone stop you, and last but not least get a license and become a professional, know what you’re doing.
GM: If anyone needs your services, where and can they reach you?
